This is a converted medical heat lamp originally made in the 1950s by the English manufactures Pifco. Pifco made a range of high quality medical products in the early 20th century from their manufacturing base in Failsworth near Manchester. This lamp is made up of a polished aluminium shade mounted on a brushed and lacquered cast steel base.
This medical lamp was a "Cures All Ailments" type of lamp and it used two carbon electrodes to create an electric arc in a very Frankenstien esc fashion. The UV created was supposed to be good for the health of the user. The practice of using this type of lamp was discontinued in the late 50s when it was established they did more harm than good !!.. Naturally we have disabled the electric arc function when we converted this to an electric desk lamp.
All of the metal parts of this wonderful lamp have been polished and then clear coated. This gives a resilient finish that will last for another 70 years ! There are some minor marks on the dome but this is 70 years old after all and these do nothing to detract from the beauty of this lamp.
Electrically, this lamp has had all new components, including a custom made bulb holder that allows the lamp to use a wide variety of E27 bulbs. The lamp has a generous 1.5 mtr power cable and an inline switch. All of our lamps are professionally wired PAT tested and are fully earthed.
The light comes with a 40w Edison Radio Valve bulb. This gives a beautiful warm white light from the front .
When lit the light looks stunning . The photos really don't do it any justice at all.
The dome on this Lamp can also be angled downwards allowing you to highlight an object or area with the lamp
This is not just beautiful light but a great piece of British Mid Century lighting that is guaranteed to be a conversation piece for years to come!
