This light was manufactured by the Simplex Electric Co under the brand Simplex-Circulume. We purchased it to restore at auction so we are unsure of its exact history but it was listed as "From the demolition of a power station"
The Simplex Electric Co was formed in 1932 when Credenda Conduit Co and Simplex Conduits Ltd of Garrison Lane, Birmingham, merged. In addition to lighting equipment and conduits, the company began to manufacture Creda domestic cooking appliances.
Between 1932 and 1965 Simplex Electric Co produced a wide range of lighting products but is primarily recognised for its early elegant prismatic street lanterns, bulkheads and latterly for linear industrial fluorescent fixtures.
The company was bought by General Electric of the U.S.A. in the 1960's and production as Simplex was halted..
About the restoration
When we acquired the lamp most of the original paint which was an unatractive olive colour was gone so decided to give it a full restoration. Following dissasembly each part was sandblasted and then gently polised to give a brushed aluminium finish. The steel cage was powder coated with a crackle silver black finish and it looks stunning.
Originally this lamp used a larger mercury vapour bulb. So we removed this along with the transformer so it now takes a standard E27 bulb. It comes with an LED Vintage bulb included.
We have wired the lamp with 1.5m of vintage braided cable and an inline switch. It has a standard 3 pin plug fitted. This allows you to use it as either a desk lamp or a wall m ounted plug in lamp. If you wanted to use it as a wired in wall lamp we would be happy to re-wire it at no additional cost for wired in use, just send us a message before purchase to discuss.
