Wow !! that’s the only word I can use to describe this lamp. It's totally unique, you will never find another one !!
The centrepiece of this lamp is a 1936 Stream-Line Filters oil pump. This pump was made by the Stream-Line Filter Company Ltd as a part of their oil filtration systems. These oil filtration systems were used by all branches of British armed forces so they could filter and re-use old engine oil. These were especially important for the RAF where very high grades of oil were used and the ability to filter and re-use them saved a lot of money and scarce resources during WWII.
Now a little about the restoration and lamp build.
When we acquired this pump it was black and by black I mean it was thick with oil and grease. It probably hadn't been cleaned for the 86 years that it had been on the planet. So into the degreasing bath it went and after some elbow grease I was amazed to uncover some of the original red paint ! .
The pump inlet and outlets gave me the inspiration for a dual bulb lamp. I didn’t want to just screw some modern pipe and bulb holders onto this lamp so I fabricated and antiqued custom pipework. I am really pleased with how they came out as the colour match and aging really blends well with the lamp.
All of the original and new parts have had 3 coats of clear lacquer to protect and maintain the excellent patina.
Now a lamp that is as special as this needed a really special base. No pieces of old scaffold board here. I have been saving a piece of antique pine that I managed to salvage from a barn 2 years ago. The barn was well over 100 years old so the colour and texture of the wood is amazing. It has tons of character including some amazing flight holes from long gone woodworm. The base was fine sanded to a lovely smooth finish. We then finished it with Georgian medium oak Danish oil and Fiddes pro wax. It looks fantastic !
The light has been professionally wired with period correct braided cable and an inline switch. The lamp has a generous 1.5 mtr power cable. The lamp is fully earthed and it has been PAT tested.
The light comes with a two Vintage Edison incandescent filament globe bulbs.
When lit the light looks stunning as it casts the most amazing shadows. The photos really don't do it any justice at all.
This is not just beautiful light but a great piece of early 20th century art that is guaranteed to be a conversation piece for years to come!
This lamp has the following approx dimensions:
