It’s funny, you hear the words “Statement Piece” banded around all the time these days. But what is a statement piece? Is it that huge spotlight from Ikea ? Sure it’s big, possibly even impressive and it does make a statement. The problem is that the statement it makes is that owning it makes you the same as everybody else. So why not change that and own something totally unique, a real one off, a talking point and a true statement piece.

Now a little about this lamp

This lamp is the product of over four weeks of work and over 100 years of history.  The base of the lamp came from a 1920’s Pioneer mangle. It has the most amazing patina and still shows some of its original green paint. It was ideal for this project as its very heavy and perfectly flat.

The lamp has a number of fantastic antique features including 3 pressure gauges. The largest and oldest of the gauges is a 1930’s Bourdons Steam Gauge. This gauge was made in Merseburg Germany between the wars. It was made by the Schäffer & Budenberg gauge company for the Willoughby Brothers shipbuilding yard in Plymouth. It’s highly likely that the gauge was used either on a steam hammer or steam winch at the shipbuilding site. Willoughby Brothers started business in 1844 and continued business in Plymouth until they closed down in 1969. There are some minor scratches to the glass of the gauge but these just add to the amazing journey that its been on.

The other two gauges are lovely brass B.O.C (British Oxygen Corporation) Welding gauges from the 1950’s. They are both Oxygen gauges and in fantastic condition.

This lamp also has a brass hand oil drip pump. It would have been used as a lubricator for a steam or stationary engine.  Although there is no makers mark on this it’s likely to be from around 1930 as this was the height of popularity for this kind of lubrication system.

The final element and centrepiece of this lamp is a fantastic antique brass switch. This was made behind the iron curtain in Kaltenkirchen Germany (formally West Germany). It is one of the highest quality switches I have ever seen and although it’s from the 1950’s it is significantly better quality than anything made today.

The remainder of the lamp is made from both new and reclaimed ¾ and ½ bsp industrial pipe and fittings. These give the lamp it’s unique industrial look and feel. Each joint is welded at the rear for durability.

For the electrification we used 3 antique brass style E27 fitments and antique style steel and brass cages. The lamp has 3 Edison filament bulbs which give a fantastic warm glow. We have wired the lamp with 1.5m of period correct vintage cable
