Stunning Antique Holophane Lamp on a Cooke, Troughton & Simms Tripod

It’s funny, you hear the words “Statement Piece” banded around all the time these days. But what is a statement piece? Is it that huge spotlight from Ikea ? Sure it’s big, possibly even impressive and it does make a statement. The problem is that the statement it makes is that owning it makes you the same as everybody else. So why not change that and own something totally unique, a real one off, a talking point and a true statement piece.

Now a little about this lamp

This amazing lamp features a stunning 1920’s Antique Holophane V1 factory pendant lamp and a 1930’s CTS tripod.

The Holophane lamp company was founded in 1898 in London. The hallmark of Holophane luminaires, or lighting fixtures, is the borosilicate glass reflector/refractor. The glass prisms provide a combination of up-light and down-light to illuminate any environment evenly without creating dark spots or glare.  This lamp is the V1 version of their industrial lamp that was produced throughout the 1920’s. This particular lamp came from shoe factory in Oldham. We acquired it a couple of years back from a salvage company that was responsible for stripping the factory when it closed.

When we got the lamp it looked very different to how it does today. The outer shell of the lamp was heavily tarnished and the Holophane glass had years of muck and grime on it. It didn’t look great so we decided to carry out a sympathetic restoration on it. After initial dismantling the main shell was gently shot blasted to remove the surface rust. It was then lightly burnished to bring out the patina of the steel. Finally it was clear coated to maintain the finish.  The lamp originally had a larger mercury vapor bulb in it which would not be suitable for a domestic environment so we made a custom bulb holder allowing the lamp to use any E27 screw thread bulb.  The Holophane glass just needed a good clean which really transformed it. The glass is perfect with no chips or cracks and its stamped Holophane made in England. The final part to the restoration of the lamp was the front ring which holds it all together. We had this professionally powder coated in satin black and it sets the lamp of perfectly. All the brass fittings were gently burnished and they look fantastic. For electrification we have used 3m of period correct antique style braided cable with an inline switch. The bulb is a huge 150mm Edison Globe LED bulb. When lit this lamp looks stunning !

For such a large impressive lamp we needed a quality tripod to mount it on. We were lucky to find this excellent Cooke, Troughton & Simms Tripod (CTS) Surveyors tripod.   CTS was formed in York in 1922. They were known for very high quality measuring instruments and tripods. This is one of their early brass and oak tripods from the 1930’s. This was given a light restoration and it not only does it look great it perfectly matches the Holophane lamp.

Don’t miss this chance to own this truly unique lamp !!
