We sell a lot of inspection lamps and this one is without doubt the nicest one we have ever had the privilege of restoring. It’s an early 20th century turned wooden handled lamp. When we received the lamp it was completely unrecognisable compared to how it is now. The hand was black from oil and grease and had at least two coats of old paint on it. The cage was painted green for some reason and it looked very sorry for itself.
The first job was to painstakingly remove all of the old paint. When we did this on the handle it revealed the most fantastic pattern of woodworm that I have ever seen on a lamp like this. The woodworm was long gone so we gave the handle 3 coats of Fides antique oak way and a gentle polish. It looks great !!. We were able to retain the original strap and pins, it has some cracking but plenty of life still left in it. The handle binding was also still intact so we cleaned and waxed it. There is some minor damage to the cord grip but nothing that detracts from the beauty and function of this great lamp
All of the metalwork was sand blasted and then polished. The lamp has lovely brass bolts and steel wingnuts to secure the cage to the wooden handle. After polishing the cage was clear coated with a clear lacquer.
The light was then professionally rewired with period correct braided cable and fitted with an inline switch. The lamp has a generous 1.5mtr power cable. The cage of the lamp is correctly earthed and it has been PAT tested.
The light comes with a Vintage Edison incandescent filament bulb. This style of lamp is excellent when used to light a corner of a room or a piece of art. Vintage inspection lamps are always popular as they can be used virtually anywhere in the home or Garage. This one is extra special as it’s so much larger than a standard inspection lamp. This opens it up to a wide range of bayonet fitting vintage style bulbs. There is some rocking of the bulb in the fitment but thats to be expected given how many bulbs have probabablky been in and out of it over the last 75+ years !!
When lit the light looks stunning as it casts the most amazing shadows. The photos really don't do it any justice at all.
This is not just beautiful light but a great piece of early 20th century art that is guaranteed to be a conversation piece for years to come!
